PERSISTENCE

A university lecturer once deviced a unique grading system for his students who were learning how to mould pots with clay.He divided the students into two groups. The first group were to be awarded marks based on how many pots they made while the other group were to be awarded marks based on how perfect the only pot they made was.

The two groups then started working. The first group were churning out pots in large numbers while the second group were forming verbose and grandiose theories about perfection.

The lecturer later observed something quite satisfactory about the first group.Though the first group would be graded solely on how many pots they moulded;the more pots they made, the better it became. The last set of pots that they produced were almost perfect.

The second group talked for hours on end about how to mould a perfect pot. Each member of the group exchanged his/her views with the other members, yet they made no appreciable progress in their effort to mould a perfect pot.At the end, they put all their ideas and theories together and moulded a pot that never got out of the realm of ordinary.

This story in itself is a teaching metaphor. The morale behind the story is that, constant practice makes room for perfection.Instead of spending long hours contemplating on how to be good at something, the trick is,just do it.

Anybody who does not develop his/her language skills would never be anything more than an average speaker/orator.Someone who does not have a flair for for writing could never be an excellent writer.A footballer who suddenly gets on the field without adequate practice would certainly not play well. For this same reason, musicians rehearse for weeks or even months before the final studio recording.

It is therefore necessary that one should have a constant sustained effort in anything one does,if one really wishes to distinguish himself/herself in that field. This same effort has been used by writers, speakers, teachers, musicians, artists, and so on,to distinguish themselves. It is called persistence.
