It strikes me as odd, whenever I hear people saying that they don't want to risk anything. It seems to me though, that such people are either behind time or civilization.Elementary knowledge of the human reproductive system has revealed that a person actually starts risking right from the gamete stage.A drop of semen(sperm and seminal fluid),contains more than a million spermatozoa(sperm cells). It is only one out of the over one million spermatozoa that will eventually fertilize the egg cell or ovum to form the zygote. At the zygote/foetus stage,so many things could go wrong ranging from miscarriage to abortion. The process of putting to bed in itself,is another risky venture during which many complications could set in.Therefore, for one's mother to have given birth to him/her in one piece was a great risk which one passed through and survived.
Everyday living involves numerous risks. Those who work in chemical laboratory risk various forms of chemical attacks. Those who work in factories risk mechanical injuries from machineries or equipments. All the so-called safety precautions are not hundred percent foolproof.
Without risk, there can be no reward.Great men of the past went through numerous risks to show their conviction.Abraham Lincoln's decision to issue his famous,"Proclamation of Emancipation",which meant freedom to coloured people of America, was rendered with the full understanding that his act would turn thousands of friends and political supporters against him.
Socrates' decision to drink the cup of poison rather than compromise in his belief, was a decision of courage. It turned time ahead a thousand years, and gave to people, the right to freedom of speech.
The decision of Gen. Robert E. Lee,when he came to the parting of ways with the union and took up the cause of the south, was made with the realization that it might cost him his own life.
The decision of the fifty-six men,spear-headed by Thomas Jefferson,to sign the American Declaration of Independence was made in good faith. They however knew that all those who signed the monumental document were probably signing their own death warrant.
Finally, there is the acceptable risk and the unacceptable risk. What separates the two is the desired goal. The more the desired goal, the more the acceptable risk.
